Long
Row Stands Out
EVERY
winery needs something it can hang its hat on. Whether it’s
the biggest selling export brand, the youngest winemaker of
the most gold medal wins – it doesn’t really matter.
In this fiercely
competitive market, any point of difference helps separate
one winery from the rest of the pack. Family-owned Angove’s
Wines in Riverland seems to have capitalized on this front.
Not only is it
one of Australia’s largest privately-owned wine companies,
it lays claim to the biggest vineyard in the Southern Hemisphere.
Nanya vineyard
has undergone significant redevelopment in recent times, including
the vine rows being turned 90 degrees to run 5km in length.
The marketers have
pounced on the concept, naming a new premium range Long Row
(after the long rows of vines). Long Row wines are extremely
good in both composition and structure.
They show Angove’s
is capable of producing both quality premium wines and those
easy-to-drink, fruit-driven styles which have served them
well in export markets. At just under $10 they are exceptionally
good value. The Long Row range includes a chardonnay, sauvignon
blanc, shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, pinot noir and
a botrytis Semillon.
The 2002 Cabernet
Sauvignon is a full bodied style with ripe black currant aromas
leasing into a silky smooth with just a hint of oak.
A gorgeous deep
garnet in the glass, it is a delight drop which perhaps goes
down a little too well. It is ideal with grilled poultry or
a rack of lamb. The Long Row 2002 Shiraz is true to variety
spiced plum and pepper on those and palate with generous,
long lasting finish.
It is recommended
it be drunk within two years and perfect partner to spaghetti
bolognaise and a big steak. The Long Row whites are fresh
fruit driven styles will be popular in summer.
Another
wine worth mentioning is Angove’s striking Belly Black
Shiraz. As the Name would suggest this striking blood-red
style with lively biting flavour. It is value for $15.
