Castello
Banfi and Poggio all’Oro Reviews
The
16 November 2006 edition of the Italian e-newsletter Wine
Newscomments on Castello Banfi and reviews Poggio all’Oro
1995. A translation of the original Italian text is pasted
below, and both the English and Italian language versions
are attached in PDF format. This review is a great example
not only of a positive review for one of our wines, but of
the esteem and respect that Castello Banfi is given in its
home market of Italy and the recognition for the estate's
accomplishments in raising the profile and standards of winemaking
in Montalcino.
“Castello
Banfi, based in Montalcino (where it holds 2,400 acres of
vineyard) is one of the most innovative and revolutionary
estates for quality winemaking in Italy, and was, in the recent
past, fundamentally responsible for the general renaissance
of the wines of Montalcino… The Brunello Poggio all’Oro
Riserva, subject of our tasting, is perhaps the wine that,
from a symbolic point of view, best represents the history
of this estate.”

Banfi
Poggio all Oro
The 1995 vintage bears a complex spectrum of aromas,
characterized by floral and mineral notes that gradually
yield to decisive tertiary scents of tobacco, vanilla
and damp earth. On the palate, the wine possesses a
great fruit impact, contrasted by some rustic tones,
that gradually become more evolved. It is an austere
wine, certainly not lacking in character, that seems
to be at the highest peak
of its evolution.
